There are usually a few accessories to wear for the bride and groom. For example, the bride can wear a veil, a bracelet, a necklace, etc. For the groom, it can be a necktie, bowtie, a pocket square, a watch, and more. While the groom has less accessories than the bride, one special accessory that he will wear is a boutonniere.

A boutonniere is the flower accessory that is attached to the groom’s suit. Not only does the groom wear it, the groomsmen wear a boutonniere too.  A boutonniere  symbolizes a few things, but essentially, it represents the main men who are part of the wedding. This is a very common issue: as a groom, it can be very tricky to pin a boutonniere!

If you are a groom reading this right now, do not worry, here is a simple tutorial on how to pin it to your suit. Please note that it is better to have an extra set of hands while pinning your boutonniere! You can always ask your groomsmen or a family member to help you out. With a little practice, you can pin your boutonniere in no time.

How to pin a boutonniere

First thing’s first! The boutonniere is place on the left side of the suit.

  1. Identify the buttonhole on the suits. It is near the lapel. This will serve you as a guide on where to place your boutonniere.
  2. You want to place it at the left side of the lapel. Usually, the boutonniere will be place a little big below the tie.
  3. Remember to place it diagonally. As reference, follow the seam of the lapel.
  4. You need two pins to attach your boutonniere. One for the main pin, and the other will hold it in case the first one falls.
  5. Turn the lapel around. Pin the boutonniere using one of the pins. Make sure that the pin is piercing the stem of the flower. Since the seam of the lapel is at a diagonal, you want to pin the needle downwards.
  6. Use the other pin to add the extra security. This will ensure that it holds all night long while you dance

TIP : You can cross the two pins.
