How to Choose a Wedding Photographer for Your Destination Wedding in Mexico
There’s more at stake, more logistics involved, and — let’s be real — you can’t just pop by their studio for a coffee before you decide.
I’ve been photographing weddings for years — in Montreal, across Canada, and now in Mexico, and I’ve heard enough stories from couples who hired the wrong person to know what actually matters.
Here’s my honest guide. 👇
There’s a big difference between a photographer who visited Tulum once and one who actually lives here. Ask them: How often do you shoot in Mexico? Do you know the venues? Do you speak Spanish?
This matters more than you think. On your wedding day, your photographer needs to coordinate with local vendors, navigate unfamiliar spaces quickly, and handle whatever comes up — and things always come up.
If you’re an international couple, you need a photographer who can communicate clearly with you and with your local vendors. Miscommunications on your wedding day are expensive. I speak Spanish, English, and French fluently — that’s not a flex, it’s genuinely useful when your florist only speaks Spanish and your family only speaks English.

At a destination wedding, you’re already in an unfamiliar place, surrounded by people who traveled to be with you. The last thing you want is someone pulling you away every 20 minutes for posed shots.
Anyone can put together a stunning highlight reel. Ask to see complete wedding galleries — ideally from weddings in Mexico — so you can see how they handle full days, different lighting conditions, and quiet moments between the big ones.
Your photographer will be with you for 8-12 hours on one of the most important days of your life. You need to actually like them. Book a video call. See if they ask good questions. See if they listen. See if you laugh together a little. That energy shows up in your photos — I promise.
I offer free consultations for couples considering a destination wedding in Mexico.
